Spending a day in Kutaisi

Kutaisi is a city rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Kutaisi offers a blend of ancient landmarks, vibrant markets, and scenic landscapes. Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or simply looking to experience authentic Georgian culture, a day in Kutaisi has something for everyone. Here’s a comprehensive guide to making the most of your visit.

Things to do in Kutaisi city:

Bagrati Cathedral

One of my favourites:

Visit the iconic Bagrati Cathedral, a symbol of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 11th century, this magnificent cathedral offers a glimpse into Georgia's medieval past. Wander through its grounds, admire the intricate architecture, and take in the panoramic views of Kutaisi from the hilltop.

The inside of the cathedral has been renovated, with modern looking pillars helping to keep it up, making it less impressive than some of the others in Georgia. However, the Cathedral grounds open late, and offer a beautiful sunset view. Many locals were also enjoying the sunset with their families and a picnic, allowing a glimpse into something a bit more local.

Tip: Arrive early to avoid the crowds and enjoy a peaceful morning.

Kutaisi State Historical Museum

For history buffs, you can learn more about the region's history at the Kutaisi State Historical Museum. The museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts, including ancient manuscripts, archaeological finds, and ethnographic exhibits. It's a great way to gain insight into the rich cultural heritage of Kutaisi and Georgia as a whole.

Green Bazaar

No visit to Kutaisi is complete without a stroll through the bustling Green Bazaar. This vibrant market is the perfect place to experience local life, sample fresh produce, and shop for unique souvenirs. From spices and cheeses to handmade crafts, the market offers a sensory feast for visitors.

Rioni River Walk

Back in Kutaisi, take a leisurely evening stroll along the Rioni River. The riverside promenade is a peaceful spot to unwind, enjoy the sunset, and reflect on your day. If you have time, stop by one of the charming cafes for a cup of coffee or tea. There are lots of cute little bridges to walk across, and it gives you a great way to see more of the city.

Enjoy the Nightlife and Colchis Fountain

As night falls, make your way to the city center to witness the stunning Colchis Fountain. Located in the central square, this illuminated fountain features golden statues inspired by ancient Georgian mythology. The fountain comes alive at night with colorful lights and water displays, creating a mesmerising spectacle that is perfect for photos and a relaxing evening stroll.

Kutaisi also offers a vibrant nightlife scene with a mix of cozy wine bars, lively pubs, and modern clubs. It’s a perfect city to get to know the true local culture.

Visit a Local Georgian Restaurant

Kutaisi is a great place to indulge in a traditional Georgian lunch. Kutaisi boasts numerous local restaurants where you can try authentic dishes such as khachapuri (cheese-filled bread), khinkali (dumplings), and pkhali (vegetable pâté). Pair your meal with a glass of local Georgian wine for the full culinary experience.

Recommended Restaurant: Palaty, a popular choice for its delicious food and cozy ambiance.

Within a 30 minute drive from the city:

Gelati Monastery

Gelati Monastery, another UNESCO World Heritage site located just a short drive from the city center. Founded in 1106 by King David IV, this monastic complex is renowned for its stunning frescoes, mosaics, and the tomb of King David himself. It is one of the largest medieval orthodox monasteries and the serene setting and historical significance make Gelati a must-visit.

Tip: Consider hiring a guide to learn about the rich history and significance of the site.

Sataplia Cave and Nature Reserve

For a change of pace, visit the Sataplia Nature Reserve. This reserve is famous for its preserved dinosaur footprints and beautiful karst caves. Take a leisurely walk through the lush forest, explore the caves, and enjoy the panoramic views from the glass observation deck.

Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes as the terrain can be uneven.

Prometheus Cave

Located about 20 km from Kutaisi, Prometheus Cave is one of the top tourist things to do. This impressive cave system features stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and underground rivers. The guided tour, complete with colorful lighting and a boat ride, is a magical experience and a great way to end your day.

Tip: Check the tour timings in advance and book your tickets early.
